Help for health managers
May 29, 2008
Traditionally healthcare library services may have a reputation as being all about the clinical….
To dispel this myth the National Library for Health have procured nearly 500 electronic health management titles, available now with your NHS athens password through a collection called Health Business Elite from EbscoHost databases.
The NLH team have also recommissioned the King’s Fund well respected ’specialist library’ of online open access resources for the busy healthcare manager.
The simpliest way to locate the health management journals is via the NLH’s My Journals service ( log-in with your NHS Athens to search for titles) or follow links to Health Business Elite on the library’s NHS Journals page.
Here’s what Ebsco have to say about their resource: “…full text journal content details all aspects of health care administration and other non-clinical aspects of health care institution management. Topics covered include hospital management, hospital administration, marketing, human resources, computer technology and facilities management. Health Business Elite contains journals such as Harvard Business Review (available back to 1922), Health Facilities Management, Health Management Technology, Healthcare Financial Management, Marketing Health Services, Materials Management in Health Care, Modern Healthcare, and many more.”
As with many online resources the health management collection is heavily North American-biased, but we do hope the collection will be of use to all you managers and administrators out there supporting the patient care process. Give us your feedback on this resource.
Bringing things closer to home the Health Management Specialist Library is a UK-focused resource provided by the King’s Fund Library. Their aim is to be ” An indispensable free one-stop shop on the Web aimed at all health care professionals with a management role. The virtual library offers you the knowledge and know-how to support health care related decisions, from commissioning to payment by results, from regulation to new providers of health care“.
The site provides:
- peer-reviewed briefings (the essentials on important topics for the busy manager in digest form),
- regularly updated information on ‘hot topics’, news alerts which can be emailed to your desktop or set up as an RSS feed
- and a database of evaluated Web resources.
The Health Management Library is one of around 20 Specialist Libraries commissioned by the National Library of Health. More on these in another post….
